Meet Leslie Colvin

Website: www.wgirlsmilwaukee.com
Year Business Started: 2009
What Type of Business is it?
The WGIRLS Milwaukee provide underprivileged women and children in Milwaukee, and globally in times of international crisis, with the support and resources necessary to achieve health, happiness, and the ability to lead productive and successful adult lives. We are all volunteers who are committed to helping others through donations of our time, energy and talents.
Why did you start this business?
My husband and I were staying at the Hope Lodge in NYC (while he was getting treated for cancer) and WGIRLS NYC volunteered and made dinner one night. We started talking after dinner and I thought WGIRLS would be a great thing to bring to Milwaukee.
It’s a great way to meet new women who are like-minded in the way that we are all busy but want to make a difference. The older you get the harder it is to meet new people.
It’s really a win win situation, you make life long friendships all while planning fund raising events, volunteering, social outings, and make our community a better place in anyway we can. Plus I have two small children and want to inspire them to give back.
Tell us anything else about your story that you don’t mind having published on the web
The WGIRLS believe that all children, regardless of race, religion or financial situation, deserve the same opportunities our members were afforded throughout childhood. These opportunities include quality education, strong, positive parental influence, and a safe and loving home. We also believe that to create these opportunities parents, especially single mothers, must have access to the essential tools of education, child and healthcare so that they may attain self sufficiency, and set a positive example for their children.
By partnering to raise funds with other nonprofit organizations whose goals align closely with our own, the WGIRLS are able to affect reverberating positive change in the lives of countless underprivileged women and children.
The WGIRLS name originated when the group decided to initiate once a week get togethers to hang out, catch up and plan events…..over drinks. Nights out with just the girls perpetually fell on Wednesdays and hence the name was born.
WGIRLS benefits are hosted in partnership with established charity organizations and focus on assisting underprivileged women and children in Milwaukee as well as helping those in need around the world. Through our events we have had the opportunity to introduce hundreds of people to one another, make new friends and party all for the benefit of great causes.
